A Personalized Approach to Asthma Management:
The New Asthma Treatment Guidelines

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of allergists, pulmonologists, and primary care physicians involved in the care of patients with asthma.

Statement of Need/Program Overview

Recently, the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program guidelines were released. One of the advances in asthma management is an added emphasis on risk assessment and monitoring the patient’s response to pharmacotherapy. The new guidelines also make recommendations with regard to single-entity inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy in the management of asthma. This educational activity will review the evolving asthma marketplace and the updated role of ICSs in asthma management.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  1. Review the latest asthma treatment guidelines in clinical practice
  2. Identify the risk of asthma exacerbations in patients with mild-to-moderate persistent asthma
  3. Explain the importance of continual assessment of response to therapy for patients with persistent asthma
  4. Specify the primacy of ICS in treating patients with mild-to-moderate persistent asthma
  5. Recall the recommendations regarding the use of combination therapy (ICS-LABA) in mild, moderate, and severe persistent asthma

Method of Participation

There are no fees for participating and receiving CME credit for this activity. During the period January 2008 through December 31, 2008, participants must:

  1. Read the learning objectives and faculty disclosures
  2. Study the educational activity
  3. Complete the posttest by recording the best answer to each question in the answer key on the evaluation form
  4. Complete the evaluation form
  5. Mail or fax the evaluation form with answer key to PIM.

A statement of credit will be issued only upon receipt of a completed activity evaluation form and a completed posttest with a score of 70% or better. Your statement of credit will be mailed to you within three weeks.
